Former Super Eagles’ captain, John Mikel Obi has found the coast cleared all the way for him to join Botafogo FC of Brazil, following the club’s failure to hook Ivory Coast’s ex-Manchester City sensation, Yaya Toure, megasportsarena.com gathered.
Yaya had emerged as a strong threat standing between Mikel and a possible deal with the Brazilian giants, but the four-time African player of the year has apparently reneged on a promise to sign for Botafogo, and has committed himself to one of their rivals instead.
Although Mikel had also been approached by another Brazilian club, Internacional, the setting is now tilting in his favour at Botafogo, who are fuming with Yaya, the high-profile club’s vice-president, Ricardo Rotenberg claims the Ivorian star misled them in transfer talks.
It is now left to be seen if Botafogo will now settle for Mikel, and if the former Plateau United of Jos, Lyn Oslo of Norway, Chelsea and Middleborough of England, Tianjin Teda of China and ex-Trabzonspor of Turkey star will agree to a deal with the Rio de Jenairo-based side.
This came after latest information out of The Samba Nation revealed that Yaya, who left Man City in the summer of 2018, following 315 appearances and 82 goals, had initially reportedly given Botafogo his word that he would sign for them, but has now committed himself to join Vasco da Gama instead – if presidential candidate, Leven Siano is elected as the club’s president.
Rotenberg blasted the former Olympiakos of Greece and Barcelona of Spain star, saying: “I’m disgusted. He’s a guy whose word means nothing. He has an attitude but no character.”
