Former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Joseph Dosu has expressed reservations over the manner in which the Golden Eaglets keep romping from behind to win at the FIFA U-17 World Cup, as he says it is a reflection of the team’s weak defence, which the coach, Manu Garba has to check, megasportsarena.com reports.
However, while calling on Garba to do something quick before the Eaglets’ next match against Australia on Friday in Brasilia. Dosu admitted that the squad has shown tremendous top quality overall in their tactical and mental approaches to their first two matches.
He added during Mega Sports on Star 101.5 FM, Lagos that the Eaglets’ strength, speed and skills are not in doubt, but warned that their ability to come from behind to beat Hungary 4-2 on Saturday and Ecuador 3-2 on Tuesday may not be possible against a tactically tight opponent.
The Atlanta ’96 Olympic Games gold medalist reasoned further that the Eaglets can go all the way to winning a sixth Cadet Mundial trophy for Nigeria, based on their exciting performances so far, but he stressed that the current leaks in their defence have to be checked quickly.
Dosu declared: “The boys have tried, but their defende is still suspect. You can’t continue letting in goals the way they are doping and keep hoping to win. They are indeed playing well in all other departments, but the defence has to be checked.
“I know Manu Garba knows what he is doing, and he is capable of doing something about the defence. Once the defence is taken care of, I am sure this team will do better and make Nigerians proud of them.”
