Nigeria’s Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) welterweight champion, Kamaru Usman has received a date in the coming month for a much-touted rematch with Jorge Masvidal, megasportsarena.com reports.
This is sequel to confirmation from UFC president, Dana White that he intends to stage a pay-per-view show in front of an arena full of fans on April 24, with the rematch between Usman and Masvidal headlining the night.
White affirmed that he intends to stage a pay-per-view show in front of an arena full of fans on April 24 in Florida, USA featuring ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ against Masvidal in the main event of UFC 261.
The stage is now set for another thriller in The Octagon, as Usman will face Masvidal for a feisty second installment of their epic face-off, after they both first met on Fight Island at UFC 251 last year.
That came when ‘Gamebred’ stepped in last-minute to challenge for the title held by Usman, only to lose a unanimous decision, which he will now aim to overturn on April 24 in Jacksonville, Florida, where there will be three big title fights.
Usman versus Masvidal 2 is now looming large, after White announced on social media that he seriously plans to stage an event in front of North American fans for the first time since March 2020.
The fight night, which has already been tagged ‘UFC 261,’ will feature three title bouts, ahead of which early media reports have already revealed that the mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion intends to sell 15,000 tickets to the show.
The UFC has not fought in front of a full arena since the start of the coronavirus pandemic but, after the promotion welcomed a few thousand fans to three events on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi earlier this year, it is now advancing same hope to the USA, where its events have been held without fans on its corporate campus in Las Vegas.
White said in a Twitter video: “I have been waiting a year for this day to tell you we are back. This is a stacked card in front of 15,000 UFC fans. I just want to say thank you, Jacksonville. I love you guys, and we will see you soon.”
