The national team of Benin Republic, The Squirrels will have two of their key players missing in Saturday’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Nigeria, due to positive coronavirus tests they suffered, megasportsaena.com gathered.
The Squirrels’ coach, Michel Dussuyer called up 23 all overseas-based players for the match against Nigeria and Sierra Leone with former West Bromwich Albion of England winger, Stephane Sessegnon as non-playing captain.
However, information out of the camp in Porto Novo reveled that two of Benin call-ups for tomorrow’s AFCON qualifier have tested positive for Coronavirus and will not be available ofr selection.
In response to the development, Dussuyer quickly handed a late call-up to a home-based player, as Dragons FC de l’Ouémé’s center back, Jean Ogouchi was invited to fill in for both affected lads, whose identities are being kept secret.
Dussuyer confirmed as much after his team’s final training session at Charles de Gaulle stadium in Porto-Novo on Thursday, but hinted that only one player was affected, as he told BJ Foot: “My group is feeling good. We always remain vigilant with the COVID.
“We had a case in the workforce that was put in isolation right away. Otherwise the rest of the troop is fine. We did the tests this morning and we are awaiting the results this evening. The atmosphere is good, the work is good.”
