Former Super Eagles’ captain, Joseph Yobo has revealed details of a telephone discussion he recently had with the Nigerian national team’s head coach, Gernot Rohr, which he says gave a good idea about what is expected from him when he eventually starts work with the squad, megasportsarena.com reports.
Yobo will get his first test as an assistant coach under Rohr once the team opens camp after the coronavirus scourge, and the former defender enthused that he will be able to hit the ground running and start making an early impact on his new duty post for the country.
Although he admitted he is yet to meet Rohr one-on-one, Yobo insisted that the dialogue they had together on phone opened his eyes and mind to the Franco-German’s technical ideology, which he hopes he will be able to fit into seamlessly once the camp opens for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
He further noted during Mega Sports on Star 101.5 FM, Lagos that he will not be the only member of the technical crew assisting Rohr, hence his strong belief that it will not be a case of too much pressure on him, considering that everyone would have their own specific duties, which he reckoned would make the job easier for them all.
The former Michelin of Port Harcourt, Standard Liege of Belgium, Olympique Marseille of France, Everton and Norwich City of England as well as ex-Fernebahce of Turkey defender concluded with optimism that his advent into coaching with the Eagles would be a huge success for him, as he wants to translate into his managerial duties the experience and achievements he gained as a player for club and country.
Yobo said: “We have been discussing on phone. I have not met him personally and he does not know me personally but we have spoken to each other one phone. We have already discussed some ideas and already have some ideas of what he wants he wants.
“I am only going to be one of his assistant. That means I am going to work with other people in the backroom staff and I will try the best I can. We will all work together to succeed and I will do the best I can to make the team better.
“We have discussed on telephone so far and we look forward to working together eventually after the coronavirus pandemic. For now we cannot do anything because of the pandemic but we have used the phone to exchange some ideas.”
