Racing Genk of Belgium striker, Paul Ebere Onuachu has returned to club duties back at his base, into the waiting arms of his Nigerian teammate, Cyriel Dessers, who says his pal’s goal against Benin Republic will make a world of difference in his career.
Megasportsarena.com reports that, indeed, Onuachu, who previously scored for the Super Eagles less than ten minutes on his debut against Egypt in 2018, buried the ball in the 93rd minute of Nigeria’s 1-0 win over The Squirrels in Porto Novo.
That goal became the ‘latest’ among all for his country, thereby giving him two milestones in green-and-white, such that Dessers is quick to acknowledge how much of a transformation his tall colleague is bound to get in the national team.
The verdict from Dessers, who is yet to play a competitive debut for Nigeria, after opting to commit his international future with the Eagles instead of his father’s country, Belgium, is now hinting at additional relevance for Onuachu.
Dessers stressed that lots of respect is sure to come for the former Young Stars of Lagos, FC Ebedie of Shagamu and FC Midtjylland of Denmark giant, who has hit home 27 goals in 32 appearances for Genk, thereby marking his personal best in a single season, and he silenced his critics by ramming home another as a sub in the 3-0 win over Lesotho this past Tuesday in Lagos.
Two goals in the spate of three days on national team duty are sure to resonate for a long time to come, and Dessers has now firmly declared that Onuachu has convinced all observers of his potential, especially after netting two of four goals scored by Gernot Rohr’s team.
Onuachu netted a last-gasp winner away to The Squirrelsfter getting off the bench and he then scored with seven minutes remaining against Lesotho following his introduction in the 74th minute, leaving Dessers to declare that an end will surely come to all misgivings about his pal’s inability to excel with the national team.
Dessers told Voetbalbelgie: “I am very satisfied for him, especially the winning goal in Benin will change a lot for Paul. For one reason or another, he still had a hard time convincing the supporters of his qualities, he has now certainly succeeded. Paul deserves all the praise and respect, he is working on a great season.”
