Glasgow Rangers of Scotland defender, Leon Aderemi Balogun has been rewarded for his recent burst of top form and regular spot in the starting line-up, with a contract extension granted him at Ibrox Stadium, megasportsarena.com reports.
Still fresh from helping Nigeria qualify for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations with two matches to spare, Balogun returns to his base in the Scottish Premiership to receive good news about a better deal waiting for him to sign.
The former Fortuna Düsseldorf, SV Darmstadt, Weder Bremen and SV Mainz of German stopper, who has also played for Brighton and Wigan Athletic of England, was all smiles on his return to Scotland, as he was handed a fresh one-year deal by the Scottish Premiership champions.
Details of the report by The Scottish Sun disclosed that Balogun earned a new deal at Rangers after playing enough games to trigger a contract extension, as a proviso in his previous deal stated that he needed to make 23 starts in all competitions to trigger an addition.
The Germany-born star reached the required milestone when he was named in the starting line-up by The Gers’ coach, Steven Gerrard for The Old Firm derby versus Celtic, which also happened to be his team’s last game before the international break.
The report adds: “Balogun has impressed since his move to the Light Blues last summer, helping the club keep sixteen clean sheets in all competitions in the matches in he was involved in. The 32-year-old has shown his versatility in recent games operating as a right-back, bagging two assists in four games.
“He replicated his club form for the Super Eagles too, starring as the national team kept clean sheets in their 2022 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against the Republic of Benin and Lesotho.”
