FC Cologne of Germany defender, Kingsley Ehizibue has received immense backing from his family members, as his parents and siblings are excited with the maiden invitation he got to play for the Super Eagles in the Africa Cup of Nations 2021 qualifiers, megasportsarena.com reports.
Although what could have been his debut in one of two matches billed against Sierra Leone in March had to be called off on account of the outbreak of coronavirus, Ehizibue has disclosed that he has no misgivings of any kind, since his family is in full support of his decision to play for Nigeria at senior level, even as he still has a huge chance with Germany, the country of his birth.
Born in Munich, Germany but raised in Holland, Ehizibue remains eligible to play for the two European countries if he chooses to do so, but the 24-year-old right-back, who played a friendly for Holland’s under-21 team on March 28, 2016, has opted for Nigerian instead.
He recalls that everyone in his family was happy and excited with the opportunity he had of a competitive debut with the Eagles in their AFCON 2021 qualifying matches against Sierra Leone in March, and they remain enthusiastic for him, even after the games were later postponed by Confederation of African Football (CAF) because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Ehizibue, who has appeared in 23 German Bundesliga matches this season, told vastly popular Dutch newspaper, De Telegraaf: “My family there is proud that I could have played for Nigeria, for sure. You can feel that in everything. But even if it is Switzerland or Germany: my family is always grateful for what it has and is due.”
