Two Karim Onisiwo headed goals either side of former Mainz man Kevin Stöger’s effort were enough to ensure the 05ers started the new season by claiming all three points at Bochum, reports Megasportsarena.com.
Onisiwo put Die Nullfunfer in front, heading home from a corner with less than 20 minutes to play in the first half.
Zentner brilliantly repelled Gerrit Holtmann’s stinging volley and the 05ers also survived a penalty check for handball before the Nigeria eligible Onisiwo expertly headed them in front from Edmilson Fernandes’ cross.
Onisiwo almost doubled the lead moments later but his shot struck the crossbar.
The enterprising Onisiwo planted a second superb header into the Bochum net later in the game to give Mainz all three points in the season opener.
Elsewhere, Borussia Dortmund kicked off their campaign with a 1-0 home victory over Bayer Leverkusen, but the result was marred by a foot injury suffered by their new attacking recruit, Karim Adeyemi after just 23 minutes.
