Super Eagles’ coach, Gernot Rohr has revealed how he discovered new kid on the block, Anayo Iwuala while playing for Enyimba of Aba in a CAF Confederation Cup decider against Rivers United of Port Harcourt, megasportsarena.com reports.
While basking in the euphoria of how he sent Iwuala on for his Nigeria debut in last Saturday’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier away to Benin Republic, and the Enyimba winger dazzled like a comet, Rohr hinted that the youngster will get more opportunities in his team.
The Franco-German tactician went on to confess that Iwuala’s performance has also given him confidence to invite more players from the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), who he acknowledged are yearning for invitations to the main national team and are eager to take the opportunity wherever it comes their way.
He added that he appreciated that contributions made by Iwuala, whose introduction to the game in place of Henry Onyekuru added spark to the Eagles’ attack and accounted to a large extent for the late goal scored by Paul Ebere Onuachu that fetched Nigeria a 1-0 away win.
Indeed, Iwuala was all dazzle and shine, after going on in the 81st minute of the game in Porto Novo, as he made the most of nine minutes plus on the pitch to show a glimpse of his highly revered potentials that have been seen while starring for The Peoples’ Elephants in Nigeria’s domestic league.
Rohr told www.aclsports.com: “He had a good impact in the game. I’m not afraid to give a chance to young players and even to local players. I saw him already playing in Port Harcourt against Rivers in a Confederation Cup game.
“I saw in the training that he has a lot of qualities and we wanted in the end some diversities in the side and Henry (Onyekuru) was a little bit tired and we are happy that such a young player can show something and he did well.”
