The speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Honourable Femi Gbajabiamila has revealed the deep level of delight he had from watching the Super Eagles live at Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos and was overjoyed seeing them beat Lesotho 3-0, megasportsarena.com reports.
Gbajabiamila pointed out that the game was played in his Surulere Constituency, hence the deeper depth of delight he derived from being live at the stadium in the company of his wife, as they made the best of the Eagles’ return to playing in Lagos.
It was 20 years after the Eagles’ last competitive game in The Cnetre of Excellence and 10 years after they beat Sierra Leone at same venue in an international friendly, such that Gbajabiamila took special delight in being part of history on Tuesday.
The nation’s number three citizen also cherished seeing the Eagles clinch all individual awards from Tuesday’s game, as SSC Napoli of Italy striker, Victor Osimhen was named man of the mach and Leicester City of England midfielder, Wilfred Onyinyen Ndidi got the gong for the game’s most valuable player, both with one million Naira price tags each.
That came after Osimhen scored a goal and provided an assist for the Eagles to round off their 2022 AFCON qualification in style, while Ndidi twinkled in midfield for the entire 90 minutes of the game, much to the delight of Gbajabiamila, who then took to social media to reveal his glee.
Overall, Osimhen finished as joint top scorer of the qualifiers with five goals, same as Zambia’s Patson Daka, while Everton midfielder, Alex Iwobi also got a mention with three goals, which was more than the duo of Paul Ebere Onuachu and Samuel Chukwueze, who netted two each.
A total of 334 goals were scored in 150 matches in the qualifying tournament for the AFCON to be staged in Cameroon in January, heading into which the Eagles pick an early ticket, much to the delight of Gbajabiamila, and the national assembly speaker from Lagos was not shy to reveal his delight.
Gbajabimila posted: “My wife and I joined the Governor of Lagos State @babajidesanwoolu, @thenff President Amaju Pinnick, at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in my Surulere 1 Federal Constituency to watch the game between Nigeria and Lesotho. Congrats Super Eagles.”
