Enyimba of Aba struggled for form and only managed to eke out a 2-1 win at home, courtesy a second half strike by Victor Mbaoma against Al-Ahly of Libya in their opening group match of the 2021 CAF Confederation Cup.
Megasportsarena.com reports that The People’ Elephant went temporarily top of Group A with Wednesday’s victory over the team from Benghazi, as the Aba club’s captain, Austin Oladapo put the home team in front after just 10 minutes.
Although the Libyans drew level from the penalty spot through Abdallah Imhamed in the 18th minute, Mbaoma restored the lead for Enyimba two minutes from the break, thereby giving the former two-time African champions something to hold unto for their second group game.
That will be away to Orlando Pirates of South Africa in continuation of the group stage of the second-tier continental clubs’ competition, heading into which the Elephants will again rely on Mbaoma, who they gladly had back after he missed their CAF Champions League first leg round clash against Al-Merriekh of Sudan due to an ankle injury.
