SV Mainz of Germany striker, Taiwo Awoniyi has received a massive bolt of support for an extension of his loan contract from Liverpool of England, as a top shot at his German Bundesliga club has confessed that they want the UAE 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup winner to stay until next season.
With Awoniyi having his a vein of rich form after the resumption of action in the German top-flight league, following a long delay caused by coronavirus, Mainz egg heads are of a view that they can still see better days from the lad, who survived a death scare after a clash of heads with Augsburg’s Nigerian-born defender, Felix Uduokhai during one of their last lap of matches in the season.
Megasportsarena.com gathered that, with the campaign now over in Deutschland, Awoniyi has returned to England to enjoy a spell of off-season training at his parent club but, as the youngster continues appearing with Liverpool’s squad as a non-playing member of their team, Mainz are making strong plans to lure him back next month.
That is the verdict of the club’s sporting director, Rouven Schröder, who confirmed that Awoniyi is currently in Liverpool, but affirmed that his club will do everything to get the former under-23 team, Olympic Eagles’ striker back before next season.
A report by Germany publication, Kicker disclosed that Mainz want Awoniyi on-loan again next season and they are already planning formal talks are Anfield, especially as they know the lad is not eligible to play for Liverpool in the English Premier League because of UK work permit rules.
This is despite the fact that Awoniyi is contracted to the EPL champions until June 2023, but he would be behind Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino in Jurgen Klopp’s pecking order of strikers should he push through a desire to stay put at Anfield.
That might not look plausible for the 22-year-old hitman, who had previously played on loan from Liverpool at FSV Frankfurt of Germany, NEC Nijmegen of Holland as well as Royal Excel Mouscron and KAA Gent of Belgium, before joining Mainz on a season-long loan last August.
During one season at Mainz, Awoniyi made 12 appearances for The Zerofivers in the Bundesliga, with his only goal of the season coming on the first day of the restart against FC Cologne and he went on to start there straight matches, which Schröder says impressed everyone at his club.
Those performances also convinced Mainz to aim at keeping Awoniyi into next season, as they were delighted with his attitude and enthusiasm; such that, though the player still has a deal with Liverpool till 2023, Schröder says they are eager to work with him again.
Schröder told German publication, Kicker: “He went back to Liverpool on July 1st, and we can imagine that things will continue for us under certain parameters.”
