Former Super Eagles’ winger, Emmanuel Amuneke is making a case for Racing Genk of Belgium striker, Paul Ebere Onuachu, who he says needs more time for him to adapt to playing in the Nigerian national team, megasportsarena.com reports.
Following another lame duck performance by the former FC Midtjylland of Denmark towering player in Sunday’s international friendly against Brazil, Amuneke posited that Onuachu is the type of player that does well for his club but takes time to settle into doing similar heroics with the national team, because he has a different level of adaptability.
The 1994 African Footballer of The Year, who played for Julius Berger FC of Lagos, Zamalek of Egypt, SV Duisburg of Germany, Sporting Lisbon of Portugal and Barcelona of Spain during his heyday, stressed during a chat with Brila FM that all Onuachu needs is understanding from fans and the media, who he also urged to give the lad time to blend into the Eagles’ structure.
Amuneke expatiated: “Not all players can adapt immediately into a team. It’s mostly about adaptability. This player can be seen from that angle, because he is doing well with his club, Genk. Some players are like that; they do well at their clubs but take time to settle down in the national team. It’s because they face a different system at their clubs than they see in the national team, so they take time to adapt. We just need to understand and give him time.”
