Racing Genk of Belgium in-form attacker, Paul Ebere Onuachu has disclosed that he is not holding any umbrage against Super Eagles’ coach, Gernot Rohr for leaving his name out of the latest list of invitees to the Nigerian national team, megasportsarena.com reports.
Rather than feel slighted or angered that his haul of 26 goals that put him top of the scorers’ chart in the Belgium top-flight league were not considered good enough by Rohr for this month’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, Onuachu stressed that he respects the gaffer’s decision.
That line of thought has now left Onuachu staying calm over his latest snub by the Franco-German tactician, even as many Nigerian fans and critics continue heating up the polity with comments scolding the coach for picking clubless captain, Ahmed Musa while leaving out the free scoring Onuachu.
Indeed, the former FC Myddtylland of Denmark giant is the current leading scorer in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League, with 26 goals for Genk this season, but Rohr has only placed the striker on standby should any of the 24 other full invitees pull out of the upcoming 2022 AFCON qualifiers against Benin Republic and Lesotho.
The reaction, though, is not confrontational from Onuachu, who has scored a goal for Nigeria, on his debut against Egypt in Benin City, but has struggled ever since in green-and-white and was a late replacement for injured Moses Simon for the last double-header games against Sierra Leone.
Onuachu told Nigerian newspaper, The Punch: “It’s the coach’s decision and I respect it. He has the last word and I can’t help it. But I will always do my best and always fight to represent my homeland.”
