Leganes of Spain defender, Kenneth Omeruo has parried his current woes and is staying grateful to the club for snatching him from an uncanny career blockade at Chelsea of England, as he still acknowledges the deep level of trust the modest and now embattled La Liga outfit had in him that spurred them into making the bold move to buy his contract from The Blues.
Megasportsarena.com reports that, although Omeruo has suffered a dip in fortunes with the team, mostly due to a series of recent injuries and the sack of the coach that cemented his stay last summer, the dark-skinned stopper says he will not complain, because he still remembers how they stood up for him.
Indeed, the departure of the coach who favoured him, Mauricio Pellegrino, has coincided with a downturn of fortunes for Omeruo, with the arrival of fellow-Super Eagles’ defender, Chidozie Awaziem and a spate of injuries also reducing his playing time with the squad thus far this term.
Rather than sulk over his current plight, the former Sunshine Stars of Akure and Stadard Liege of Belgium star, who played on loan from Chelsea at ADO Den Hag of Holland, Middlesbrough of England as well as Alanyaspor and Kasimpasa of Turkey, stressed that he is happy for how Leganes helped him escape from days of unfilled expectation at Stamford Bridge.
In a down-to-earth reflection of his past and present, Omeruo, who signed for Chelsea in 2012 but never played a single competitive match for them, said he has nothing to complain about at Leganes because he remains happy that they helped him cut ties with The Blues this summer.
Omeruo told AS: “Every year I thought it was the opportunity to play for Chelsea, but in the end it didn’t come. So last season I told them: ‘Let me go play in LaLiga and see if I have a level. I had several options, but the coach at the time told me that he wanted me to stay. The club made an effort to sign me. I didn’t think they could buy me from Chelsea, but they got me.”
