Trabzonspor of Tukey striker, Anthony Nwakaeme again proved why he deserves an invitation to the Super Eagles in months to come, as he was on song with a pivotal goal for his side in the Turkish Super Lig, on a weekend many Nigerian players with bigger followership at home and abroad were let floundering on both team and personal levels, megasportsarena.com reports.
On an evening when Alex Iwobi could only get off the bench with Everton of England, while there was not a single minute of action for Tom Dele-Bashiru at Watford, Leon Aderemi Balogun at Brighton and Kelechi Iheanacho at Leicester City, Nwakaeme got a goal and an assist in his side’s 3-0 victory against Ankaragucu.
The former Hapoel Be’er Sheva of Israel hitman, who has been invited by Eagles’ coach, Gernot Rohr only once, set up Trabzonspor’s second goal scored by Yusuf Sari two minutes into the second half and then later made sure the points were safe for the visitors in the 56th minute.
However, while Iwobi played as a substitute in England, with Dele-Bashiru, Balogun and Iheanacho all missing, Wilfred Onyinyen Ndidi entered the rank of Nigerian centurions in the English Premier League with his 100th appearance since joining Leicester City fom Racing Genk of Belgium in 2017.
Ndidi was again in The Foxes’ starting line-up for his 100th EPL appearance in the Premier League, and played all 90 minutes of the game at Amex Stadium, as Leicester continued in their current top form with a 2-0 win over Brighton, with goals from Ayoze Perez and Jamie Vardy.
Watford midfielder, Dele-Bahiru was on the bench for all 90 minutes at Vicarage Road, and The Hornets’ striker, Isaac Success remained out with injury, as the hosts fell 3-0 to Burnley, whose goals were notched by Chris Wood, Ashley Barnes and James Tarkowski.
Elsewhere in England this weekend, Iwobi got off the bench but could not save the day for the home side, as Everton were beaten 2-0 at Goodison Park by Norwich City, who netted through Todd Cantwell and Dennis Srbeny for the visitors.
Iwobi replaced Morgan Schneiderlin in the 56th minute for Everton, while Adam Idah was missing from The Canaries’ squad, same as Arsenal youth team product, Bukayo Saka, who was out due to injury, as The Gunners were held to a 2-2 draw by Southampton at Emirates Stadium.
