Trabzonspor of Turkey attacker, Anthony Nwakaeme has come out with a startling allegation that Super Eagles’ coach, Gernot Rohr looked down on him after his debut in the Nigerian national team, megasportsarena.com reports.
It was a Russia 2018 World Cup qualifier away to Algeria, but Nwakaeme appeared to struggle in the game, which left the Eagles’ crew dissatisfied with his performance and he has not gained a recall since.
However, the fiery striker has now declared in a down-to-earth outburst that he has been overlooked ever since only because he does not play in one of Europe’s top leagues, and he was at Hapoel Be’er Sheva of Israel when he got his only cap.
Although the 31-year-old striker, who played the game against Algeria in 2017 and lasted for 71 minutes, admitted it was not his best performance on the pitch, Nwakaeme believes he would have got a second chance had he been playing in the English Premier League or Spain’s LaLiga.
Nwakaeme, who hit double figures of goals over the last two seasons in the Turkish Super Lig and so far has six goals and with five assists, said during a TV interview: “If I had played in England or Spain instead of Israel, they would have given another chance. Because I played in Israel, the national team coach Rohr looked down on me.”
