Fortuna Düsseldorf of Germany goalkeeper, Emil Maduka Okoye has admitted he is not sure of getting a place in the squad for this Friday’s German Bundesliga match against Jamilu Collin’s SC Paderborn, but enthused that his time to shine in regular action with his club will soon come, megasportsarena.com reports.
Having been promoted from their fourth-tier affiliate team to train with Düsseldorf’s main squad for the second half of the season, Okoye said he is optimistic of getting to star in the top-flight Bundesliga before this season comes to an end.
However, while staying positive over his chances in the main squad, especially with his latest invitation to the Super Eagles for upcoming matches against Sierra Leone in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, Okoye further admitted there is a possibility of him leaving in the summer.
The lanky shot-stopper, whose Nigeria debut came in a high-profile international friendly against Brazil last October in Singapore, added that he is staying loyal to Düsseldorf for now, but conceded that he may have to consider offers at the end of the current season.
As the current season winds to a pulsating close, though, Okoye disclosed that he is encouraged by the recognition his hard work by both club and country, hence his promotion at Düsseldorf and another invitation to the Eagles, but he stressed that the need for him to continue growing could see him look in the direction of another team during the summer transfer window.
Okoye told AOIFootball.com: “It feels good when one’s hard work is recognized and I am delighted to have been upgraded to the first team. But I want more than sitting on the bench as a reserve goalkeeper, though I know my chance will come but, I really feel I want more and if I get it elsewhere, I will give it a chance.”
