Girondins-Bordeaux of France striker, Josh Maja could be set to continue the uncanny Nigerian tradition at Glasgow Rangers of Scotland, as the club that currently has the duo of Joe Aribo and Sheyi Ojo on their cards are said to be in the hunt for his signature, megasportsarena.com reports.
Not only would it be a return to Great Britain, where he first shot to limelight as top scorer at Sunderland of England, Maja would also get the chance to follow in the footsteps of former Gers Nigerian duo of Sadiq Umar and Ovie Ejaria at the Glasgow-based Scottish Premiership club.
A report by goal.com adds that the possibility of a deal for Maja at Ibrox means the Super Eagles’ fringe player could be on his way out of France less than two years after he moved to join another Nigerian star, Samuel Kalu at Bordeaux.
The report stated further that Maja could be returning to United Kingdom if the latest transfer speculations turn into reality, though he is only one of five players on The Gers’ radar as a likely replacement for their outgoing top scorer, Alfredo Morelos , who is wanted by the English Premier League quartet of Newcastle United, Leicester City, Crystal Palace and Aston Villa.
Maja’s agent, Emeka Obasi has close links with Rangers, having brokered the deals that took Ojo and Aribo to The Light Blues last summer, and he also represents Malcolm Ebiowei, who plays for The Gers’ youth team, but the ploy of continuing the club’s Nigerian tradition is facing stiff challenge from Liverpool’s Rhian Brewster, Dundee United’s Lawrence Shankland, Sint-Truiden’s Mohamed Buya Turay and Clermont’s Adrian Grbic.
They are all being considered to fill in for the likely exit of Morenos in the summer, but Obasi is staying upbeat for a deal that would see Ojo and Aribo welcome Maja, who has eight goals and three assists from 24 games across all competitions with Bordeaux, despite gaining limited time in Ligue 1 matches so far this season.
Another major hurdle facing Maja’s aspirations for a move to Rangers, though, is that he has a contract running with Bordeaux until the end of the 2022/23 season; which means he might end up sticking with Kalu into the coming campaign, rather than link forces with Ojo and Aribo in the SPL.
