Leicester City attacker, Kelechi Iheanacho may yet face another torrid spell with The Foxes this season, as the embattled Super Eagles’ returnee has been rated third in the perking order at King Power Stadium, megasportsarena.com gathered.
Heading into Saturday’s fixture at home with AFC Bournemouth, a fresh cloud of doubt rose over Iheanacho’s chances of a starting spot, as Leicester’s assistant, Chris Davies pointed out that the former Manchester City lad will have to pick any opportunity he gets in the club’s new rotation policy.
With Jamie Verdy already a sure-banking for a regular stating spot, unless injured, the choice of his strike partner is now to be shared among Iheanacho, Damarai Gray and Ayoze Pérez, but Davies hinted that the Nigerian lad has the least versatile abilities among the lot.
Iheanacho’s inability to be flexible during action has now been fingered as the main reason behind his absence from The Foxes’ squads for their first three matches of the English Premier League this season, as well as in the Carabao Cup during the week.
Consequently, while Iheanacho received a recall to the Nigerian national team after blasting three goals in two pre-season matches for his club, the setting still looks gloomy for him at Leicester, as Davies pointed out that the UAE 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup gold medalist and most valuable player will need to do more to upstage Gray and Perez.
Davies told Leicester Mercury: “We try and balance the bench the best we can. Kel has been working well in training; there are no issues at all.
“It’s just a case of recently; we have had Demarai on the bench instead of Kel. (Demarai) is a multi-functional attacking player who can play out wide and up front.
“We also have Ayoze who can play up front, so we just felt the balance that we have, it was better to stick with what we did on the weekend.”
