Super Eagles’ coach, Gernot Rohr has sensationally been linked with the national team job in DR Congo, following the resignation of Florent Ibenge as handler of the Central African country’s team, megasportsarena.com gathered.
Although Rohr has repeatedly stated that he is committed to ending his contract with Nigeria until next year, he has been sounded out by DR FCongo’s football association, FECOFA president, Constant Omari.
Pressure is now mounting on Rohr to take over the job, as Omari is said to have opened a line of communication with the Franco-German gaffer, following the decision by Ibenge to quit, after five years on the job.
A report by congoprofond.net stated further that Rohr is the favourite to replace Ibenge, despite the Eagles’ gaffer being contracted to Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) until 2020.
NFF president, Melvin Amaju Pinnick has also repeatedly stuck with the 66-year-old, who became Eagles’ coach in 2016, but the former handler of the national teams of Gabon, Niger Republic and Burkina Faso, has been under fire from Nigerian fans after failing to guide his team to glory at the recent Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
Nigerians have described Rohr as stereotype, indecisive, tentative and timid, such that many of them would be happy t see him leave, but Pinnick says the NFF cannot afford to pay a $1m severance penalty should they decide to sack the tactician.
Interest from DR Congo may now be an easy escape point for Rohr, who has also coached Bordeaux, OGC Nice and Nantes in his home country, with his biggest success in Nigeria being the bronze medal he helped the team get at AFCON 2019, after taking the Eagles to the group stage of Russia 2018 World Cup.
