C’Wealth Games 2022: Bitter-Sweet For Team Nigeria In Birmingham

1

It was bitter-sweet for Team Nigeria table tennis teams on Saturday at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham as the men advanced to the quarterfinal, but the women lost out as the competition gets intense, Megasportsarena.com reports.

The men’s team continued their winning streak after brushing aside Cryprus 3-0 in the team event to finish first in Group 2 while the women lost out despite producing a stunning 2-2 comeback against England, but eventually bowed out 3-2.

The duo C. Bardsley/Tsaptsinos despatched Fatimo Bello/Edem Offiong in three sets 11-6, 11-8, 14-12 in the women’s doubles event.

And in the singles, Ojomu Ajoke lost 11-6, 7-11, 8-11, 11-3, 9-11 to C. Bardsley.

Although Effiong Edem put up an explosive come-from-behind performance to beat M Tsaptsinos 3-1 (4-11, 11-9, 13-11, 12-10), it wasn’t enough to stop the English ladies from qualifying for the quarter-final.

In weightlifting, Nigeria’s Emmanuel Appah missed out on a podium finish after placing 5th in the 61KG men’s event.

Bolanle Sogbamu couldn’t also make it past the round of 16 in women’s boxing, losing by a split decision to English boxer Jodie Wilkinson
