Calvin Bassey Compared to £27M Arsenal Star

Glasgow Rangers defender Calvin Bassey has impressed under Giovanni van Bronckhorst and is now earning praise from Ibrox hero Brian Ladurup, Megasportsarena.com reports.

The Gers may have lost the league title to Celtic but you could forgive Rangers fans for not caring at all right now.

Rangers are into the final of the Europa League against Eintracht Frankfurt and are going for glory next week.

Seeing off Borussia Dortmund, Braga and RB Leipzig to reach the final has been truly incredible.

A number of players have been important in this run and Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey has been absolutely vital under Van Bronckhorst.

The 22 year Nigeria international joined Rangers at the end of his contract with Leicester City back in 2020 for a paltry £230,000, which was even a compensation  despite Leicester valuing him at around £3million.

Rangers will now feel that they landed an absolute steal.

First deployed as a left back, Bassey has excelled as a left-sided centre back under Van Bronckhorst.

No matter which position Bassey is deployed in, he just seems to do the job for Rangers.

Given his age and potential, Bassey could become even more important for Rangers in the coming years.

Rangers legend Brian Laudrup thinks Bassey will be one of the first names on the Rangers teamsheet against Frankfurt.

Laudrup added that Bassey’s development this season has been ‘astonishing’ but especially under Van Bronckhorst.

Laudrup added that he agrees with the comparison to Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes.

Gabriel cost Arsenal £27million whilst Bassey cost just £230,000 – and Laudrup is predicting major profit for Rangers down the line.

“As Giovanni van Bronckhorst begins to consider his plans for the Europa League final, I’d wager Calvin Bassey is one of the first names being scribbled down,” said Laudrup.

“The development in the young defender has been astonishing this season. Actually, not this whole season. Just over the six months since Van Bronckhorst picked him to solve a centre-back shortage for his first game in charge against Sparta Prague last November.”

“I saw Connor Goldson make a comparison with Gabriel at Arsenal, who cost them £27million a couple of years ago. He said Bassey could reach that kind of level if he kept improving. I definitely agree.”

“One of these days, I expect him to make Rangers a lot of money,” he added.
