A cross-section of youth football club coaches and team managers across various communities of Lagos State will on Thursday, December 19 hold a technical meeting with a renwoned Amercian soccer tactician from University of California Santa Barbara, USA, megasportsarena.com reports.
The forthcoming meeting, which will hold at a popular hotel in FESTAC Town, Lagos will be part of the line up of activities of a five-day visit to Nigeria by the American technical buff, Tim Vom Steeg, who is also soccer head coach at the said university.
Originator of the programme, Machael David (aka Omasaro) disclosed further that apart from the meeting with youth club coaches, Vom Steeg will also help to structure his charity foundation in Ojo area of Lagos and pick talents from a screening process, through which a couple of skilful, intelligent and outstanding kids will be selected for full scholarships in America, megasportsarena.com reports.
David, who is now fully based in the USA, said the talent hunt venture, which will take place from December 20 to 22 at First Bank Field, Satellite Town, Lagos, is part of his contributions to the society that produced him, and giving something back to teams like Santana Boys of Ojo as well as the Surulere-based duo of National Grassroots Dream Team and Community Action Through Sports (CATS), all of which he played for before travelling abroad.
He expatiated that the three-day programme will climax on Sunday, December 22 with at least two or three of the best kids, who were found to be outstanding in both academic qualities and football abilities, will be granted all-expenses paid trips and full scholarships to study in the USA.
The former player of Nigerian lower division league side, FC Ebedei of Sagamu also disclosed that Vom Steeg will start his stay in Lagos on December 19 with a visit to a royal father, which will be followed by his meeting and training session with the invited coaches from leading schools and youth clubs across Lagos State, before the main event starts the following day.
He added: “Angels of The World, a non-profit based in Gig Harbor Washington, USA is bringing College Showcase to Lagos in December. A program that aims to promote the importance of higher education beyond the Secondary school level.
“On its first edition this December, the University of California Santa Barbara’s head coach Tim Vom Steeg, will be coming as a guest speaker to inspire the SSS 3 students and grassroots coaches that will be in attendance.
“Mr. Vom Steeg is not just coming as a guest speaker but as a scout, looking for two-three SSS 3 student-athletes to award them the opportunity of travelling to America Fall of 2020 to attend the University of California, Santa Barbara on scholarship.
“Also in attendance for the event will be the President and Co-founder of Angels of The World, Machael David, a graduate from UC Santa Barbara.
“After college, Mr. David was drafted to play professional football by Colorado Rapids in the US. Unfortunately for him, cancer ended his football career early but opened a new door for him to create opportunities for the youth of Nigeria to discover their God-given gifts and purpose.
“In the same December, he will be hosting a football tournament for under – 13 boys/girls called, Tournament of Angels to select 36 young footballers to be in a life-changing seven-year development program. The 36 selected kids will have all their school fees and supplies paid for.
“They will receive daily meals, basic health care, financial support, and many more. Every two years, an additional 36 kids will be selected to join the program until no child in Nigeria lacks basic human needs or access to higher education.
