Former Super Eagles’ goalkeeper and ex-trainer of shot-stoppers in the Nigerian national team, Ike Shorunmu has backed the choice of late invitees to the squad, ahead of Sunday’s friendly against Brazil, as he says the coach is still embarking on a rebuilding process, megasportsarena.com reports.
Although many fans are wont to complain about too many new additions to the squad, and believe some of those added to the list do not deserve the spots, Shorunmu insists the coach knows what he wants.
The former shot-stopper stressed that Eagles’ coach, Gernot Rohr should use Sunday’s game as another chance to try out some of the previously untested players and experiment with new tactics, all of which he believes are the essences of friendly matches.
While also noting that Rohr is still building the Eagles, with lots of young players cropping up every other day, ‘Ike-Anobi’ added that the duo of Viv Solomon-Otabo and Tyronne Ebuehi, who were called up to replace injured Samuel Kalu and Kenneth Omeruo, now have their chances to prove themselves in the Eagles and probably cement their place in the squad for the near future.
Shorunmu added: “It’s another opportunity to see some new players and how they will play together with the older ones. Some have been called up to replace those who are injured, which is a good step to give other players their chances as well. It is also part of the rebuilding process.”
