West Bromwich Albion of England defender, Semi Ajayi has revealed how much he relishes being part of The Baggies’ squad that sealed promotion back to the English Premier League on Wednesday, and he is giving thanks to God for making it possible, megasportsarena.com reports.
The 26-year-old Arsenal of England former under-23 team captain and ex-Rotherham United defender will become the next Nigerian player to feature for WBA in the EPL, after Nwankwo Kanu, Ifeanyi Udeze, Victor Anichebe, Peter Osaze Odemwingie and Aide Brown Ideye, ahead of which he expressed delight for the role he played in helping his side return to the top-flight.
Ajayi revealed his feelings after The Baggies returned to the top echelon, following two years in the English Championship, with a 2-2 draw against Queens Park Rangers, which was just good enough to help them edge in ahead of third-placed Brentford Town.
The versatile former Flying Eagles’ invitee, who can play as a right-back, central defender or holding midfielder, featured for the duration of Wednesday’s game, during which goals from Grady Diangana and Callum Robinson cancelled out strikes by Ryan Manning and Eberechi Eze for QPR.
The soft-spoken tall defender, who was named Championship Player of the Month for April and won his club’s awards for Player and Goal of the Season, has been a consistent figure since he moved over to The Hawthorns from Rotherham, having played 47 games across all competitions and scored five goals for the newly promoted side.
The Super Eagles’ fast-rising lad, who joined Slaven Bilic’s team in the summer of 2019 on a four-year contract, after the relegation of Rotherham to the third-tier league, was one of the stand-out performers for his previous club in the 2018-19 season as he scored seven league goals in 46 appearances but his efforts were not enough to help the club avoid relegation.
Ajayi took to social media to express his happiness in the wake of Wednesday’s confirmation of his club’s elevation, for which he gave appreciation for divine intervention as well as the efforts of everyone at Albion in the success, as he posted: “God is the greatest, Premier League, we did it.”
