The death of ace sports writer and unionist, Segun Ogunjimi in Abuja has raised a fresh round of lamentations from top shots at Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), as it came while the soccer fraternity was still trying to overcome grief caused by the passing of ex-international, Yisa Sofoluwe (Dean of Defence), megasportsarena.com reports.
In a case of one death too many, just a week after former national team goalkeeper and Super Eagles’ assistant coach, Joe Erico also passed to the great beyond, the NFF and Nigerian football stakeholders in general were thrown into deep mourning following the demise on Wednesday of Ogunjimi, who worked for The Nation newspaper.
A deeply emotional tribute from the NFF’s communications department described Ogunjimi as ‘highly professional, resourceful, humble and diligent, widely respected by colleagues, administrators and other stakeholders in the sector, and a credible role model for aspiring newshounds.
‘A veteran of the trade who learnt from some of the very best and imbibed the good old ethics and tenets of journalism, Ogunjimi served as treasurer of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, FCT chapter and was Liaison Assistant of SWAN President Honour Sirawoo.’
The long line of solemn lamentations at the soccer governing body were led by the general-secretary, Dr Mohammed Sanusi, who heaped glowing accolades on the man that covered several national and international sporting events during his lifetime.
Sanusi submitted with a tone of gloom: “We lost a very good friend. He was objective and unbiased in his journalism. He cross-checked and balanced his stories before reporting. May God be the guide to those he left behind.”
