Fortuna Dusseldorf ii of Germany goalkeeper, Emil Maduka Okoye has come out with a startling revelation that Brazilian icon, Dida is his biggest role model in the shot-stopper’s trade, megasportsarena.com reports.
Although Dida is now long forgotten among soccer fans across the world, Okoye goes back in time to reveal the inspiration he gained from the former AC Milan of Italy keeper, who cut a niche for himself in Brazil’s World Cup-winning squad of USA ’94.
Okoye went on to reveal how delighted he was getting his Nigeria debut against DIda’s country and, though he confessed he was surprised that he got the opportunity to star in last Sunday’s 1-1 draw, he was thrilled with his breakthrough with the Super Eagles.
He need up keeping a clean sheet a a second half substitute, due to a freak injury copped by Eagles’ first choice on the afternoon in Singapore, Francis Odinaka Uzoho, and Okoye admits it was a dream come true for him.
With high possibility of him now getting to start the Eagles’ next two matches, Africa Cup of Nations qualifies against Benin Republic at home and away to Lesotho, both in November, Okoye admits things are happening really fast for him.
After his initial surprise at the chance he got playing against the country of his role model, Okoye is now taking more inspiration from the tricks he gained from watching Dida during the tall Brazilian’s heyday, and says he now wants to make many marks for himself as well in Nigeria’s green-and-white.
Okoye recalled: “I grew up watching Dida, he is a legend in Brazil and AC Milan and I felt great. I talked to Ederson and he is also one of my favourite goalkeepers. It’s crazy being on the same pitch with a goalkeeper you watch his videos on YouTube.
“I didn’t expect to play, I was just sitting on the bench like the last time in Ukraine and I knew I’d have to wait for my chance. I didn’t know it will come so soon but things can be like that.”
