Former Super Eagles’ captain, John Mikel Obi is facing fresh rounds of dilemma following interest being expressed in his services by two top clubs in Mexico, megasportsaerena.com gathered.
So soon after two Brazilian clubs, Internacional and Botafogo started jostling for his signature, the former Lyn Oslo of Norway, Chelsea and Middlesbrough of England, Tianjin Teda of China and Trabzonspor of Turley midfielder is now in the radar of the Mexican duo CF Monterrey and Tigres UANL, who once pad the wages of ex-Eagles’ striker, Ikechuwu Uche.
Before Mikel makes up his mind to ether move to Brazil or not he s now facing another dilemma of choice in Central America, where Monterrey and Tigres have entered the race to sign the ace midfielder, as both Liga MX clubs he would add a high level of experience to their aspirations.
He has generated interest since becoming a free agent in March, after terminating his contract with Trabzonspor and the well-respected star, who is currently observing lockdown in London with his family, continues getting new options with each passing week, although he last kicked a ball in Trabzonspor’s 3-1 win against Yeni Malatyaspor on March 11.
Before then, though, he had featured 17 times for the Trabzon-based Şenol Güneş Stadium side before leaving Turkey, such that the Rio 2016 Olympics and 2019 Africa Cup of Nations bronze medalist, who made 91 appearances for the Eagles and was earlier part of Nigeria’s third AFCON conquest in 2013, a still cutting a strong bargain n the transfer market.
Confirmation in this regard is coming from a report by Mexican publication, TUDN, which stated that Monterrey and UANL are ready to battle Internacional and Botafogo for his signature, even as the second of the two Brazilian clubs, who first came into the picture, are reportedly willing to offer him an 18-month deal that would be worth $2m.
However, fresh interest now coming his way from Monterrey and UANL adds to the options set before Mikel, thereby giving him more to think about in arriving at a decision on his next port of call and growing factors in the choices he will have to weigh up.
Dramatically though, in a fast bid to outsmart the other three suitors, Mexico City-based UANL are touting a semblance of the glory days Mikel had in winning the UEFA Champions League and Europa League with Chelsea, as they are offering him an appearance n the CONCACAF elite clubs’ scene should he agree to join them before the Apertura 2020 season commences.
