Kwara United of Ilorin pulled off a shock with away to Sunshine Stars of Akure on Sunday, which took The Afonja Warriors up to second spot in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) standings, megasportsarena.com reports.
Heartland of Owerri also got an away victory, as they silenced the partisan crowd of supporters for Mountain of Fie & Miracles Ministry (MFM( FC of Lagos, while Heartland put behind their money problems to move out of the relegation zone courtesy of a 2-1 win at MFM FC.
Kwara United’s 2-1 victory in Akure takes them to 18 points from nine matches, three behind leaders Enyimba of Aba, who earlier beat Plateau United 2-1 Saturday, while Heartland’s win in Lagos against MFM eased their relegation woes as they now have 10 points from nine matches
It was also a symbolic victory for Heartland’s coach, Fidelis Ilechukwu (Kamara), whose current team beat his former club, while Jigawa Golden Stars beat fellow relegation battlers Adamawa United by the odd goal to boast their survival hopes.
There were also home wins for Akwa United of Uyo and their city mates, Dakkada FC as well as Rangers International of Enugu, but the biggest win of the weekend came in Akure, where Sadeeq Yusuf scored his seventh goal of the season.
Yusuf put Sunshine in front on 50 minutes, but Kwara United fought back to draw level in the 54th minute through Issa Gata, before Stephen Jude delivered the match winner four minutes from time.
