Everton of England midfielder, Alex Iwobi is celebrating Nigeria’s bright start to the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, as he believes the Super Eagles already have a strong footing to build on for a ticket to the next continental soccer showpiece in Cameroon, megasportsarena.com reports.
While also admitting his personal delight in getting one of the goals in the Eagles’ 4-2 victory away to Lesotho in their second match of the series last Sunday, the former Arsenal of England playmaker posited that it confirmed Nigeria’s good start to the AFCON 2021 qualifiers.
Last weekend’s victory in Maseru came four days after the Eagles defeated Benin Republic 2-1 in their opening game of the qualifiers, as they made good use of home advantage at Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo to romp from a goal down and take maximum points to ignite the race to Cameroon 2021.
The Eagles also had to come from behind to beat The Crocodiles in Maseru, a game in which Iwobi got Nigeria’s second goal of the game, and he has now stated that he was happy to open his account in the AFCON 2021 qualifiers, and tagged his goal a bonus for his untiring efforts.
It was also a revival of sorts for Iwobi, who, before Sunday’s game, had failed to hit target in ten straight matches for the Eagles, spending a total of 541 minutes on the pitch before netting his first ever AFCON goal, and he took to social media to reveal his delight, posting: ”Good Start To The AFCON Qualifiers , Pleased To Grab A Goal Too As A Bonus.”
