Manchester United of England striker, Odion Jude Ighalo has failed to make it a back-to-back swoop of the club’s best goal of the month awards as he missed out on the gong for June to Portuguese midfielder, Bruno Fernandes.
Megasportsarena.com reports that expectation had been high among Nigerian football fans that the former Super Eagles’ star would smile home with the award he first picked in March with his sublime strike against LASK Linz of Austria in the UEFA Europa League.
However, his looping goal in the English FA Cup quarter-finals’ 2-0 victory over Norwich City has not been deemed good enough to fetch him a consecutive feel of the award, which has instead gone to Fernandes, who is his fellow-January arrival at Old Trafford.
A report by allnigeriasoccer.com disclosed: “Portuguese sensation Bruno Fernandes has dethroned Odion Ighalo as Manchester United’s Goal of the Month winner.
“The January signing from Sporting CP, Manchester United’s Player of the Month for June, won a club double after his second effort against Brighton and Hove Albion was voted the most eye-catching goal scored by a United player last month.
“Fernandes saw off competition from Ighalo, Anthony Martial, Harry Maguire and Mason Greenwood to win the accolade. The former Nigeria international was nominated for his acrobatic effort in the Red Devils’ 2-1 win against Norwich City in the quarterfinals of the FA Cup.
“Of the five goals netted by Ighalo since his arrival at Old Trafford, it is worth bearing in mind that only two have not been shortlisted for the Goal of the Month – his strike against Club Brugge and one of his efforts in the win at Derby County.
“The former Super Eagles striker, who has accumulated 13 appearances in a Manchester United shirt, won the Goal of the Month award for March 2020 for his effort against LASK in the Europa League.”
