Galatasaray of Turkey returnee, Henry Onyekuru has come out with details of the chain of issues and factors that led to him opting for a third stint with the Turkish Super Lig side, even as he stressed that he is totally thrilled with his ability to join the team on loan from AS Monaco of France.
The deal was sealed after some protracted dealing between both clubs, but Monaco eventually reached a financial agreement with Gala over the player’s latest switch.
This means Onyekuru will now play the second half of the season in the Super Lig, where he first starred in a full transfer from Everton of England three seasons ago, before popping up on loan from Monaco for the first half of the past campaign.
During his first spell with Gala, Onyekuru helped the team win the 2018/19 Turkish Super Lig title and, while his second spell was not as a rosy as the first, especially as he got injured in his very first league match back in Istanbul, Onyekuru hopes to be third time good, even as he showed off at his unveiling with jersey number seven.
He, however, confessed that his inability to get playing time at Monaco motivated his desire for a return to Galatasaray and, now that he is back with the team that also has Oghenekaro Etebo and Valentine Ozornwafor and in their ranks, Onyekuru believes the opportunity to revive his career has come.
Onyekuru told BBC Sport Africa: “Honestly, I’m very happy to be back in Galatasaray where I had previously enjoyed success. Here at this historical club, I can get more regular games to be back in shape. Play on a weekly basis to get my form and important fitness back.
“I chose Galatasaray because I’ve not been playing for six months. I just want to go somewhere that I don’t need to try too hard to prove anything to the coach or force myself into the consciousness of the club or fans.”
