First Bank female basketball club of Lagos again fell short in the semi-finals of the African Women Club Champions Cup competition in Maputo, Mozambique, and failed to reach the final in their fifth straight attempt.
The Elephant Girls were brought down to earth by the hosts country’s team, Ferroviario De Maputo, who put a halt to the Nigerian club’s five-game unbeaten run to reach the final of the 2018 FIBAACCW.
The FIBA Africa Zone 3 representatives from Lagos suffered 34 turn overs, 10 more than that of Ferroviario, who eventually won 72-56 points to advance to a consecutive final against five time champions, InterClube of Angola.
First Bank Girls struggled in the first half (29-33) but gained momentum in the third quarter as they outscored the host 19-15. The Elephant Girls scored 11 points in the last quarter which was not enough to overcome a determined Ferroviario De Maputo.
Four players led the way for Ferroviario in double figures; Virginia Tyson Thomas (16), Ingvild Mucauro (16), Amelia Macamo (13) and Anabela Adriana Cossa (13).
Jasmine Nwajei was the only player on double digits for the Elephant Girls. She had a game high 24 points, shot 56.25 percent from the floor, 3 for 6 from behind the arc and 3/6 from the free throw line in 32 minutes.
