World basketball body, FIBA has recognised Musa Ahmadu-Kida as president of Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), having posted his name in place of Tijjani Umar’s on their website.
Nigerian basketball has been engulfed in leadership crisis following the election in Kano on June 12 as well as the one in Abuja on June 13.
Ahmadu-Kida emerged as president of the Abuja poll supervised by the sports ministry and the Nigeria Olympic Committee, while Umar was declared the winner of the Kano election.
Despite the sports ministry and the NOC’s endorsement of the Abuja election, Umar, who had earlier served as NBBF president for two terms, maintains that he is the authentic leader of the country’s basketball.
However, the latest update on FIBA website is coming just days after the body sent a letter signed by its secretary-general, Patrick Baumann, to Ahmadu-Kida and Umar.
In both letters, FIBA had stated that they do not recognise both elections and called on both factions to resolve the crisis internally under the auspices of the NOC.
Also listed alongside Ahmadu-Kida are Babatunde Ogunade (executive vice-president) and Chimezie Asiegbu (Secretary-General).
Meanwhile, the Umar-led NBBF faction has declared that they are ready for peace and reconciliation with Kida’s group, in compliance with FIBA’s mediation.
This comes after the global body had earlier written to the two factions vying to be in control of the board to settle their differences.
Umar, said in a statement signed by his faction’s media consultant, Mr. Patrick Omorodion that: “We are ready to honour the invitation from the Nigeria Olympic Committee, NOC, that FIBA Africa has appointed as the only body that would ensure reconciliation in Nigerian basketball.
“We shall submit to all measures that would employed by the Olympic Committee towards achieving peace.”
