Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai has joined in celebrating Liverpool’s emergence as champions of the English Premier League, which he described as matchless achievement by The Reds and their German gaffer, Jurgen Klopp, megasportsarena.com reports.
Although the former Federal Capital Territory (FCT) minister admitted he has supported Liverpool’s EPL rivals, Arsenal, for several years, El-Rufai went on to acknowledge that the achievement at Anfield is quite astonishing and historic.
He, however, revealed that his son is a long-standing Liverpool fan, who deserves to also be congratulated for sticking with The Reds in 30 years of their hunt for another title in the English top-flight league, which eventually come to fruition this past Thursday, when Chelsea beat last season’s champions and the previous one’s winners, Manchester City.
El-Rufai also added congratulations for two of his colleagues in government and politics, who he also praised for their enduring support of The Reds and loyalty to the Merseyside outfit, just the way he and other Arsenal fans have done for The Gunners over the years, despite their struggles to return to the era of ‘The Invincibles.’
City’s 2-1 loss to Chelsea on Thursday night ensured Liverpool claimed their first top-flight title in 30 years and The Reds’ boss, Jurgen Klopp praised his players for “writing their own history” with the achievement, which sent bolts of celebrations through the streets at their base, in defiance to all social restriction regulations put in place to stem the spread of coronavirus.
Klopp’s side earlier defeated Crystal Palace 4-0 on Wednesday evening to leave them needing just two points from their remaining seven games to win the title and, with second-placed City now 23 points behind with seven matches remaining after Thursday’s result at Stamford Bridge, Liverpool have an unassailable lead at the top of the standings.
En route to the title, Liverpool put together a record-equaling run of 18 consecutive wins from October through to February 29 and have won every league match at home this season, making it a record 23 on the bounce, while also setting a club record of 44 matches without defeat, a run that is stretching back to last season.
This brings to an end a 30-year drought as Klopp’s class of 2020 ended their wait for a topflight title that stretched back to 1990, when Kenny Dalglish’s side won the old League championship; meaning that Liverpool now have 19 titles to their name, one behind Manchester United, who sit on 20, and El-Rufai has joined in the celebrations on behalf of his son.
He took social media to share his emotions of the moment, which continues rocking Liverpool, several cities where their fans are based worldwide and several Nigerian households since the confirmation of their title on Thursday, while stating that a big part of his thoughts is especially for the joy that the epochal conquest of England brought for his son, Bello El-Rufai.
The governor stated via @elrufai: “CONGRATULATIONS!! My congratulations to my son & life-long @LFC supporter, Bello @B_ELRUFAI, MyOga @hadizel & Sen Uba Sani @ubasanius. Waiting 30 years for this is proof of enduring loyalty, matched only by those of us that consistently supported @Arsenal since 1969.”
