Heracles Almelo of Holland striker, Cyriel Dessers has expressed a deep level of hope that he would be easily and quickly accepted by other players in the Nigerian national team, when he eventually joins their camp, as he wants to hit the ground running in the nation’s colours.
Megasportsarena.com reports further that, having sent tongues wagging by emerging joint-top scorer n the recently cancelled Dutch Eredivisie season, where he notched 15 goals for lowly-rated Almelo, Dessers believes he can enact same form in Nigeria’s green-and-white jerseys.
He, however admits it is an aspiration he will not be able to pull off on his own, considering that team work is the best route to success n the round leather game, such that the youngster with a Belgian father and Nigerian mother is now soliciting for unflinching support from all players he will be meeting in the Eagles when eventually the camp opens.
Dessers could have got his first feel of the Eagles’ atmosphere in March, when his name had been included for two 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, home and away against Sierra Leone, but the advent of coronavirus put that plan on hold, much to his disappointment.
The soft-spoken hitman admitted he was shattered that he could not make his Eagles’ debut in March, but he still looks forward to linking forces with the squad sometime this year, once the dreaded COVID-19 fades away, and says he would mostly cherish the opportunity of forming a deadly strike force with Lille Metropole of France whiz-kid, Victor Osimhen in attack.
Dessers told BBC Sport: “When (the games against Sierra Leone were) canceled, it was really painful. It hurts, because I thought this was going to be one of the best moments of my life, or of my career. I watch football a lot and especially attackers.
“Nigeria has a young team. Much of the selection is in Europe, so I think the adjustment will go smoothly. I hope they quickly accept me in the team. I look forward to seeing Victor Osimhen. I think a striker like Osimhen is great. I hope I can help and support him.”
