Racing Genk of Belgium recent signing, Cyriel Dessers has explained that he snubbed offers from SPAL of Italy and Celta Vigo of Spain simply because he made a promise to himself as a kid that he would play for his home town club once he turned professional.
Megasportsarena.com reports that Dessers could not keep that promise early enough, as he moved to Holland first and soon signed for Heracles Almelo, where he eventually shot into limelight last season, where he ended up joint-top scorer in the Dutch Eredivisie with 15 goals to his name.
He quickly used that as a fulcrum to get back on track with his promise, hence his decision to snub lucrative offers from SPAL and Celta Vigo, in preference for a move to join Paul Ebere Onuachu and Stephen Odey at Genk, where he grew up under the care of his Belgian father and Nigerian mother.
The mulatto lad, who gained his first invitation to Nigeria’s national team before coronavirus put all matches on hold, admitted he was very close to joining Celta Vigo in January, but he did not complain when Almelo rejected the move; and he jumped at the opportunity to join Genk when his home town club came forward with a four million Euro offer.
Dessers told La Derniere Heure: “In my head I was almost at Celta, but Heracles blocked the transfer. They needed their top scorer. I also spoke with SPAL, but the club were last in Serie A and that didn’t really appeal to me.”
