Former American collegiate soccer star, David Egbo has taken a major step forward in his fast-rising professional career, as he joined Vancouver Whitecaps of Canada as their first selection in the 2021 Major League Soccer (MLS) Super Draft.
Megasportsarena.com gathered that the 22-year-old Egbo, whose contract with Akron FC of America expires in 2024, will officially join The Blue & White pending the outcome of his medical, work permit, visa and International Transfer Certificate (ITC).
The product of University of Akron, played three seasons at Akron, during which time he scored 21 goals and provided 13 assists in 56 appearances from 2017 to 2019, but will now seek even greater impact after signing his first MLS contract with Vancouver.
It is also another opportunity to show vastly he has improved in recent time, as the all-action attacker, who led the Mid-American Conference per-game averages of 0.75 goals and 4.00 shots in his last season with The Zips, and placed second with 0.75 assists while wearing the captain’s armband as a junior will try to show he has really come of age.
Fortunately, Egbo has received an early sign of a comfortable stay in Vancouver, as the club’s coach, Marc Dos Santos is relishing the youngster’s potential and posited that his move to BC Place will further aid his growth.
Egbo’s new coach submitted: “David has a very good profile. We like his work rate and qualities that can complement our current group of attackers. This will be his first experience at this level, and we will provide him the opportunity to grow and develop. We are very pleased to add David to our team and look forward to welcoming him to Vancouver in the coming weeks.”
In his response, the Kaduna-born striker, who helped University of Akron win top spot at the MAC Tournament and secured a College Cup runners-up finish in 2018, expressed delight with his deal and enthused: “I am very excited to sign my first professional contract with Vancouver Whitecaps FC. I can’t wait to start playing and winning with my new teammates.”
