Glasgow Rangers of Scotland budding defender, Calvin Bassey has been tipped for greater impact and thrills with the Scottish Premiership club, as one of The Gers’ former players, Alan Hutton believes the youngster is growing in leaps and bounds, megasportsarena.com reports.
Hutton took another look at Bassey’s performances so far in pre-season, as he edges towards a regular spot in the main team this term, and submitted categorically that the youngster is making giant strides under the club’s coach, Steven Gerrard.
The ex-player is of a view that the former Liverpool of England midfielder and captain has been able to polish Bassey to a large extent, with his efforts now shining bright, as the Nigerian-born Italy youth international keeps excelling when called upon to showcase his talent.
With that in mind, Hutton is tipping the 21-year-old left-back to break into the starting line-up of the Scottish Premiership champions this season, though he will have to compete with the more experienced Croatia international, Borna Barisic for a spot.
The latest round of accolades for Bassey is coming from Hutton, after the youngster played all 90 minutes against Livingston on the opening day of the season, after he had been on the bench for the UEFA Champions League fixture away to FF Malmo of Sweden, as Barisic was preferred.
Incidentally, of 15 appearances Bassey made for Rangers in all competitions last season, only six were starts, but Hutton believes this term will be different, even as he highlighted the lad’s main attributes, though also admitting that the lad has to improve on his crossing ability.
Hutton told Football Insider: “He’s such a powerful young boy. He’s obviously got a lot to learn but you can see he’s making big strides under Steven Gerrard.
“I think he can learn from Borna Barisic. I think defensively, Calvin Bassey is very good, he’s very strong. He gets into the right areas and sometimes the cross maybe let him down.
“He did pick out a few but that is maybe the side of the game that he needs to brush up on. He’s very young, he’s still learning and that will come.
“He’s got good full-backs round about them to help him with that process so yeah, he’s another top performer.
“Again, a headache for Steven Gerrard. Who does he pick? Does he go back to Borna Barisic or does he stick by Bassey? It’s great to have those options.”
