Arsenal of England youth team player, Bukayo Saka put up a brilliant outing for The Gunners in their high profile pre-season friendly against Barcelona, but his efforts could not save The Gunners from losing 2-1, megasportsarena.com reports.
Saka got off the London club’s bench when the scoreline was still 1-1, but all his defence piercing passes to the attackers could not get the required connection for goals, and Barca stormed back stronger to punish his team in Sunday’s game at Camp Nou.
The result means Arsenal failed to get a fine end to their pre-season run, as they slumped in the Joan Gamper Trophy final, which was the first ever friendly between them and Barca, despite having previously faced each other on nine occasions in the UEFA Champions League.
Saka made several incursions that saw him hit many highlights in the game, even as he went on as replacement for Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the 71st minute, in what became the Nigerian-born youngster’s fifth appearance for The Gunners’ first team in pre-season.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang opened the scoring with a fine finish in the 36th minute after receiving a pass from Mesut Ozil and the score stayed that way until the 69th minute when Arsenal’s Maitland-Niles put the ball into his own net as he attempted a back pass.
Eight minutes after Saka’s introduction, Aubameyang could not get a touch on the winger’s neat pas and, in the 80th minute, Martinelli fired just wide after another good ball from the rising star, after which Luis Suarez scored a last minute goal to hand Barca victory.
