Bassey Scores First Ajax Goal

Calvin Bassey scored his first goal for AFCAjax as they recovered from their UEFA Champions League bashing against Napoli to beat FC Volendam 4-2 in the Dutch Eredivisie.

After Dusan Tadic had given Ajax a 17th-minute lead from the penalty mark, the much vilified Nigeria defender doubled their lead six minutes before the break.

Left unmarked in the hosts’ penalty area, Bassey headed Steven Berghuis’ well-taken cross past goalkeeper Filip Stankovic.

The goal comes as a relief for Bassey, who has been on the receiving end of negative comments from Ajax greats.

Dutch great Marco van Basten criticised Ajax’s transfer policy last week and former Ajax hero Marciano Vink pinpointed Bassey’s poor distribution.

And now former Ajax, PSV Eindhoven and Torino star Wim Kieft, who helped the Netherlands win Euro 88, has attacked the former Ibrox defender’s play.

He said: ” Calvin Bassey playing football hurts my eyes. Apart from his lack of quality on the ball, he is above all very rash. Physically, he is fine, but Ajax cannot play the dominant game they like with him in the team.”
