The board of badminton Federation of Nigeria (BFN) has sent a congratulatory message to their president, Francis Orbih, over the celebration of his birthday on Monday, megasportsarena.com gathered.
The birthday message from the badminton body’s executive committee described Orbih as an ‘incredible and industrious’ man, who has brought upliftment and reformations to the sport within the short while of his tenure at the helm of their federation.
The felicitations comes at a point Orbih said the federation is working to ensure that Nigeria’s top players’ qualify for this year’s Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.
With that in mind, Africa’s reigning champion Anuolowapo Opeyori, along with doubles partner Godwin Olofua and female ace, Dorcas Adesokan, who is also Africa’s reigning champion, will attend the Olympic qualifiers in Estonia, Sweden, Uganda and Kenya, New Zealand, Finland, Netherlands and Croatia, where they will garner points for Tokyo 2020.
Orbih also stated that the Nigerian team would take part in the All Africa Senior Championship in February in a bid to qualify for the Thomas Cup, where Nigerian players have not played in 10 years, and Uber Cup, in which they are yet to feature.
The Nigerian team is also expected to attend the West Africa Circuit of Ivory Coast, Ghana and Benin Internationals while the BFN will also continue its pursuit of scholarship for Nigerian players in China.
Other events for the year are Launch of the Shuttle time for Schools, 6th Lagos international Badminton Classics, 4th Mutual Benefits National Badminton Championship and 4th Katsina Golden Star Badminton Championship.
While assuring that the federation will introduce at least one age grade national championship, Orbih also stated that it will also hold a technical course for coaches and umpires, as well as the National Badminton Festival and the inauguration of the Nigeria Badminton Hall of Fame, but the busy schedule did not stop the executive committee from wishing him a happy birthday.
While wishing him the best of his special day, as he clocks a year older, the BFN top shots and their media unit took to social media to add a prayer for long life and better tidings ahead in life for Orbih, who is also the chairman of Lagos State Badminton Association.
The BFN message read: “A beautiful Happy Birthday to our incredibly industrious President @uforbih. The man who is reforming and lifting our amazing Sport, Badminton is a year older! Have an wonderful new season Boss! Live more! Laugh more Presido!!”
