Barcelona Femeni of Spain attacker, Asisat Oshoala is taking consolation from her personal spirited efforts and her team’s gallant fight in the UEFA Women’s Champions League semi-finals, but admitted that losing the game to VfL Wolfsburg of Germany was a painful pill to swallow, megasportsarena.com reports.
However, despite admitting the agony of defeat, Oshoala took solace in a battle well fought by her side, after Wolfsburg ground out a 1-0 win over Barca on Tuesday to reach the final for a fifth time, while the Super Falcons’ captain lost the opportunity of two-straight appearances in the grand encounter in which she scored a consolation goal last season.
Oshoala lost the chance of adding another record to her already saturated cap when Sweden forward, Fridolina Rolfo put The Wolves ahead in the 58th minute against the run of the play at The Anoeta, after firing home from close range, as last year’s beaten finalists failed to clear the danger.
Barca had 16 attempts on goal but only once managed to test Wolfsburg keeper Friederike Abt, who saved a header from Oshoala in the first half which appeared to deflect off the hand of Wolfsburg defender Kathrin Hendrich, but the Spanish side’s appeals for a penalty were ignored.
Oshoala headed narrowly over the bar soon after Rolfo’s goal, while Spain internationals Mariona Caldentey and Jennifer Hermoso also missed the target; as Wolfsburg saw the game out to book their place in the final as they look to add to their two European titles, won in 2013 and 2014.
It means Oshoala will not get a second straight grand occasion in the competition, as he team will not be at the 2020 Champions League final that will take place on Sunday at the same stadium in San Sebastian – against either four-time champions and last year’s winners, Olympique Lyon or Paris Saint-Germain, as both French teams meet at San Mames in Bilbao on Wednesday.
The four-time African Women Footballer of The Year also received comforting words from South Africa defender, Janine Van Wyk, who took to social media with soothing words for the former FC Robo of Lagos, Rivers Angels of Port Harcourt, Arsenal and Liverpool of England as well as ex-Dalian Quanjian of China ace.
“Unlucky to our African Superstar Asisat Oshoala for losing out on making through to the UEFA Women’s Finals. You have worked hard to get to this stage & no doubt that you have made everyone proud on the African Continent, Van Wyk stated; and ‘Super Dee’ responded viz: “Thank You Janine.”
