Under-20 national team, Flying Eagles’ former captain, Abduljeleel Ajagun has become the third Nigerian player to play this season in South Africa’s Premier Soccer League (PSL), following his arrival at Cape Town City FC, megasportsarena.com reports.
The former club of former Super Eagles’ winger, Victor Obinna Nsofor have acquired Ajagun on a free deal, following his release by KV Kortrijk of Belgium in October, and a report by South African transfer portal, FARpost confirmed that the 27-year-old midfield battler is already in Cape Town, ahead of his official unveiling.
The former Dolphins of Port Harcourt star, therefore, joins Kaizer Chiefs’ goalkeeper, Daniel Akpeyi and Stellenbosch FC striker, Stanley Dimgba for this season’s action in The Rainbow Nation’s DStv Premiership.
He will now seek a career revival at the ambitious Mother City side, despite having made only three appearances in the Belgian First Division A for Kortrijk this season before he parted ways with the modest club.
Ajagun will now hope to fare better than Nsofor, who joined Cape Town City in September 2017 but failed to make an impact, as he netted just once in 12 PSL matches and was released by The Citizens in February 2018.
The 27-year-old Ajagun has enjoyed previous spells with Levadiakos of Greece as Roda JC Kerkrade on loan from Panathinaikos of Greece, which he joined ahead of the 2013/14 campaign and scored on his official debut against Platanias.
He helped Panathinaikos clinch the Greek Cup in his first season, while the team also finished second in the Greek Super League in 2014 and 2015, while his former coach at Roda, Yannis Anastasiou was behind his move to Kortrijk in July 2017.
He spent two-and-half years with the club before being loaned out to AC Omonia of Cyprus in January 2019, then returned to Kortjik ahead of the 2019/20 campaign, during which he scored once in 18 matches in the First Division A, but his latest port of call is now in Nelson Mandela’s country.
“#FARPost can confirm that Cape Town City have signed Nigerian attacking midfielder Abdul Jeleel Ajagun. Previously played in Greece, Netherlands & Belgium,” the report added, as the midfielder becomes his new team’s third signing, as they move to replace Kermit Erasmus, with Aubrey Ngoma, Prince Agyemang looking like flops, while Justin Shonga also arrived this month.
