The Nigeria duo of William Troost-Ekong and Isaac Success are celebrating their successful promotion bid with Watford of England, following a 1-0 win over Milwall, megasportsarena.com reports.
Although Success did not feature in the English Championship encounter and Troost-Ekong struggled for form in 90 minutes of action, they would both gleefully celebrated being part of the historic squad, as The Hornets gained a return to the top-flight at the first try.
Troost-Ekong and Success’ weekend was set alight, after Ismaila Sarr’s penalty early in the first half proved to be just enough to earn Watford a 1-0 victory over Millwall and confirm an instant return to the Premier League.
Brentford’s win at Bournemouth earlier in the day meant that only three points would be good enough for Watford, who also had Joseph Hungbo on their bench for the duration of the game, which saw their coach, Xisco Munoz celebrating nicking he feat alongside Norwich City, who we relegated with them last season.
Millwall came close on a number of occasions to delaying a promotion party that traditionally sees Hornets fans jump in a town-centre pond, but Sarr’s 11th-minute penalty proved enough to book their place back in the top flight.
Munoz was drafted in midway through the season to take over from Vladimir Ivic and will now plot a way to make sure The Hornet’s get a long stay in the EPL, as stats showed they have returned to the top-division after one season away, it is heir fourth time of gaining promotion and they eqaulled a club record of eight successive home victories.
Munoz is the fourth Spanish manager to earn a promotion in Football League history, after Roberto Martinez (2007-08, Swansea City), Aitor Karanka (2015-16, Middlesbrough) and Rafael Benitez (2016-17, Newcastle United).
While Troost-Ekong and Success celebrate collective gains in the Championship, their glee came few days after a personal day of delight emerged for Middlesbrough striker, Chuba Akpom, who hit target to end a long drought in front of opposing nets, and quickly dedicated the goal to his son.
The former Arsenal of England barrel-chested attacker, who is on loan at Boro from AEK Athens of Greece, hit target in a game that saw Middlesbrough keep alive their aims of escaping relegation from the English Championship.
In the wake of the second-tier league away fixture, Akpom, who has also committed his international future to the Super Eagles of Nigeria, scored the match winner in a 2-1 win for Middlesbrough and ended a 17-game goal drought.
Freddie Ladapo, Michael Ihiekwe, Chiedozie Ogbene and Mathew Olosunde all featured for Rotherham United, but the Nigerian lad that hit headlines was Akpom, as he scored the most crucial goal in the 55th minute, thereby notching home his fifth of the season in the lower division league.
The 25-year-old Akpom, who has played for Arsenal, Hull City, Brentford Town, Coventry City and Brighton & Hove Albion of England as well as St. Truiden of Belgium and PAOK Saloniki of Greece, posted afterwards on social media: “Winning goal for my boy.”
