Nigerian football fans have received a bolt of gratitude from players, coaches and officials of the national team, Super Eagles, following their qualification for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations, megasportsarena.com reports.
The Eagles sealed their ticket to Cameroon 2022 with two games to spare, following a couple of early wins and same number of draws before last Saturday’s clash with Benin Republic, thereby leaving the coach, Gernot Rohr excited and overjoyed.
The Franco-German tactician admitted as much in his review of the AFCON 2022 qualifiers and he submitted that he and his players owe lots of support to Nigerian football fans, who he noted did not write his side off after their humbling 4-4 draw at home with Sierra Leone in the third match of the series.
While also hailing his side’s unbeaten run in the qualifiers, which included two clean sheets in their last two games, as they won 1-0 away to Benin Republic and beat Lesotho 3-0 this past Tuesday in Lagos, Rohr concluded that he was happy seeing his side emerge as runaway winners of Group L with 14 points from six matches.
“To win 3-0 against Lesotho was a good result. We did not concede a goal and we wanted to be more solid after our two games in November. We did two clean sheets, which was good for the stability and balance of the team. To also score three goals not from set pieces was also interesting.
“We recorded four wins and two draws, same as we did for the World Cup qualifiers. Again, we qualified before the two last games and were unbeaten away. We thank Nigerians for their support even after the two draws. We want to continue to be always the best,” Rohr posited.
