New arrival at AC Omonia of Cyprus, Shehu Abdullahi has expressed satisfaction with the deal that takes him to the Cypriot First Division outfit and declared that he will do everything to get the best results for the club, megasportsarena.com reports.
Abdullahi stated as much in the wake of the official announcement by Omonia of his arrival as a free agent in a two-year deal, which sees him stage a return to Cyprus for a second spell in the Mediterranean Sea island nation, where he previously played for Anorthosis Famagusta from 2016 to 2018.
The 27-year-old defender-cum-midfielder, who has also previously played for Sokoto United, Kano Pillars, Qadsia of UAE and União da Madeira of Portugal, said he is happy to join Omonia as a free agent, following the end of his contract with Bursaspor of Turkey, who he decided not to sign a new deal with after they missed out on promotion to the Turkish Super Lig at the end of last season.
Abdullahi will now hope to go one better than the 48 appearances he got with Anorthosis across two seasons in the Protathlima Cyta, scoring three goals in a total of 3,956 minutes, especially as he stands the chance of featuring in this season’s UEFA Champions League – if his side can defeat Olympiakos of Greece in the play-off round.
A report by goal.com read in part: “The Super Eagles right-back has completed a return to Cyprus after spending two-and-a-half years at Bursaspor. Omonia Nicosia have announced the signing of Abdullahi Shehu on a free transfer following the expiry of his contract at Bursaspor.
“The 27-year-old penned a two-year deal with the Cypriot champions and he will be looking to help them qualify for the UEFA Champions League group stage this season. Shehu, who previously played for Anorthosis in Cyprus, left Turkey at the end of his contract with second division side Bursaspor in August.
“The Kano-born defender joins Ghana striker Ernest Asante and Senegal’s Mamadou Sene in Henning Berg’s team for the 2020-21 season. Omonia currently sit seventh in the Cypriot top-flight table having won just one of their last three matches, with five points after three games.
“Last season, Shehu contributed four goals in 33 games for Bursaspor, however, his efforts were not enough to help the Green Crocodiles return to the Turkish Super Lig after their sixth-place finish.(He left) Turkey at the end of his contract with second division side Bursaspor in August.
The defender’s new Cypriot club stated via their official website: “OMONIA football player is the 27-year-old Nigerian international midfielder, Abdullahi Shehu, who has been playing for Bursaspor in recent years. The cooperation contract is for 2 years. We welcome Shehu to the OMONIA family & wish him every success.”
