Sunday turned out to be a day of amazement for Nigerian players in Europe, as West Bromwich Albion of England defender, Semi Ajayi netted his first goal in the English Premier Lague, while Paul Mukairu was also on song in Belgium.
Megasportsaena.com reports that Paul Ebere Onuachu was also among the goal scorers on Sunday across the world of football, with his 15th of the season in 16 matches for Racing Genk of Belgium.
In England, Ajayi, who was guilty of an own goal in the previous match, scored for the first time in the EPL and it was enough to earn West Brom a point away to Liverpool, as the former Rotherham United defender-cum-holding midfielder powered home a late header at Anfield.
Ajayi, who had been denied his first EPL goal earlier this month by a serious deflection in an game away to Manchester City, helped his side stage a bold fight in their war against relegation, though they remain second from bottom eight points from 15 matches.
In Belgium, Onuachu scored his 15th goal of the season, as he struck on after 24 minutes to consolidate his place as the leading scorer in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League, but Genk were pegged back by Waasland-Beveren.
Onuachu, who netted only nine goals last season, which was his first after arriving from FC Midtjylland of Denmark, opened scoring in the encounter for Genk, who are now second on the table and just two points behind the defending champions, Club Brugge.
The 26-year-old Onuachu, who has been terrific this season and continued his fine performances at Luminus Arena with yet another strike, as he was accorded his 15th start of the campaign and made the most of the opportunity to increase his goals’ tally.
Onuachu formed a three-man attack for The Blue and White along with Junya Ito and Theo Bongonda, and helped his side continue on winning ways after last weekend’s victory over Kortrijk.
The Super Eagles forward featured for 84 minutes before he was replaced by his compatriot, Cyriel Dessers, and the victory propelled John van den Brom’s men to the second spot on the league after gathering 35 points from 18 matches.
Also in Belgium on Sunday, Mukairu scored his second goal for Anderlecht to return to winning ways courtesy of a 2-0 home win over Germinal Beerschot, as he hit target in the 71st minute in his seventh start for Anderlecht, after beating two defenders before he drilled the ball into the far post.
Mukairu has now scored two goals and two assists in nine appearances in the league since his arrival from Antalyaspor of Turkey in October, while Anderlecht have now shot to fourth on the table with 32 points from 19 matches.
